Kerosene is a fuel produced by distilling crude oil at extremely high temperatures. This process creates a fuel with a lower “gel point” than No. 2 heating oil. Consequently, it can withstand sustained freezing temperatures better.
Kerosene was trademarked in 1854, but the process of making it dates to the 16th century. For a long time, people have used kerosene to light lamps, cook and perform various functions on farms. However, with the increasing availability of electricity, natural gas, No. 2 heating oil and propane to American homes in the 20th century, the use of kerosene declined.
